Strictly Social presents Zo! & Choklate

My signature event Strictly Social is back on Friday June 21, 2013 with a very special show! Zo! of the Foreign Exchange will be joined onstage by Choklate for what is sure to be one of the best soul shows in LA this year. It will also be the first time I am producing a show at the Bootleg Bar which is a fairly new venue in the city that has been gaining a lot of buzz for some great shows.

Strictly Social presents Melo-X - Saturday Jan 19, 2012

I am back at it with another edition of Strictly Social. Now in its 5th year my ongoing collaboration with DJ Destroyer is my true stamp on the Los Angeles scene. I have been able to book a cross section of progressive artists who truly represent the Nu-Soul vibe. While I am no longer doing these shows on a monthly basis I am more interested in doing these shows when I have access to an artist who fits the vibe of what I am trying to create.

On Saturday January 19, 2012 I am proud to present Brooklyn's Melo-X. This producer, rapper, and remixer became known for remixing Maxwell's most recent album but he has put his touch on awesome remixes of Rihanna, Lana Del Rey and Quadron. Truly next level sexy beat shit!

5 Years Of Strictly Social - Thursday August 23, 2012

No matter how you look at it 5 years of doing anything is a pretty solid achievement. On August 23, 2012 I will be celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Strictly Social, the event that I began in August of 2007 with DJ Destroyer and Lucy Beer. While Lucy is no longer on board, Destroyer and I kept things going and produced a night that was unique in Los Angeles. The concept has always been to present soul music with an edge in a very contemporary and party driven way. As the main event showcase for my website Nu-Soul, Strictly Social became the place where I could book the artists that I thought were amazing. Surprisingly enough there were lots of people in LA who thought these artists were amazing as well.

Over the years I have hosted some truly outstanding performers both local and international, all the while helping to foster a community of artists in LA. Strictly Social has become more than I have ever imagined over the years. We have taken the show on the road to New York, San Francisco and San Diego, released several mixtapes and been the first to take a chance on some unknown artists. I have worked with such amazing people as N'Dea Daavenport, Sy Smith, Mark de Clive-Lowe and Lisa Shaw to name a small few.

For our 5th Anniversary we are taking things up a notch and moving to a new venue. The Echo in Echo park is going to be our new home and its a step up for sure. This well loved venue holds 350 people often has a show every day of the week. They have the knowledge, staff, and marketing to help take Strictly Social to the next level.

I am so excited to continue the journey of Strictly Social and I am committed to bringing the best lineups that I possibly can. I have always tried to find a balance between biggers names, buzzy new acts, and underground innovators over the years and I will continue to do so!

My Vision For Strictly Social Feb 2012

Really looking forward to this month's edition of my party with DJ Destroyer, Strictly Social, for a number of reasons. For one, it's my first purely electronic show I have done. There will not be any vocalists performing, just producers and beatmakers. And secondly I am re-introducing the B room for the first time really since we had Soul Good rocking Drum&Bass in there. This time, it will be Soulection, an incredible label and brand that I discovered who pretty much embody the Nu-Soul Magazine sound. So the night will be representing some of the best LA has to offer including Brainfeeder, AlphaPup, Plug Research, and Soulection. And of course Nu-Soul! So if all goes well the night will come off like a soulful Low End Theory which I think is the missing link in the LA scene. So excited for this shit!!!!

Zo! and Sy Smith at Strictly Social 1.19.12

I return to my main haunt Little Temple this week for my first show of 2012. I am cutting down on the number of Nu-Thursdays nights that I do keeping it to about 2 or 3 per month as opposed to 4 or 5. But I hope to stack really good lineups and give myself enough time to promote each one. So far the year is looking good and the first one back features the always beautiful Sy Smith and the Foreign Exchange's Zo! This is a show a lot of folks have been asking for so I think it is going to be great!

If you are interested in checking it out there is a $10 discount list. Just RSVP to events@nu-soulmag.com

4 Years of Strictly Social - 8.18.11

On August 18, 2011 I will be celebrating the 4th Anniversary of my monthly event Strictly Social. It's pretty hard to believe that four years ago I was planning my very first Strictly Social. We started humbly enough in North Hollywood, but 4 years later I feel as if I have actually helped create and support a whole new scene in Los Angeles. There is a growing community of artists who have discovered a platform through these events and have gone on to develop relationships that have brought about exciting new partnerships and sounds.

As the centerpiece of what I wanted to share with people in regards to Nu-Soul Magazine, Strictly Social has really served as an experiment in the open-mindedness of the LA music scene. I have consistently exposed new talent and a multitude of emerging genres to those who were in the building.
I am so proud of reaching this incredible milestone! Thanks to everyone who has been a part of the movement since the beginning: Destroyer, Myxzlplix, Lucy Beer, Asya Shein, Thornell Jones, Loslito, Kenya, Ian Lights Out, Jayvon, Atlantic Connection, Novena and all the incredible artists who have come my way!

Come show some love for the BIG 4th Anniversary show on Thursday August 18, 2011 featuring Nikko Gray, defSound and Brook D'Leau!

GRILLADE feat The Park, Ragen Fykes, Keelay

Borrowing their name from the traditional Creole dish made of meat braised in a rich sauce with vegetables, Grillade (pronounced “gree-YAHD”) too is hearty and filling. Fronted by vocalist Ragen Fykes, the band is as many parts Betty Davis and Nancy Sinatra as it is Cream and Jefferson Airplane. Producer, keyboardist and percussionist, Keelay offers up: “We’re musicians - artists. Grillade is a band that was born in an era where bedroom producers, singers and rappers are a dime a dozen. But we are playing the gigs, we are spending the time in the studio, we are crafting a brand new sound”.

Featuring Live Performances By:

HAVANA Entervention Promo Tour

Southern California’s soulful singer-songwriter Havana has a lot in
common with the flava-filled Caribbean island’s fresh liberation. On
her 2005 debut she worked with an assortment of talented producers such
as Nicolay, Symbolic One and Waajeed selling an impressive 18,000
units (physical & digital) to date. Her upcoming new album Entervention,
which features production by producers like Trackademicks, GB (Sound
in Color), Brook D’Leau (J*Davey) and Beat$treets, celebrates the
coming to grips of Havana’s hard upbringing with her life, using music
to express her experiences and family issues, but never forgetting to
have fun along the way. Havana wraps up her run on the Entervention and
Strictly Social promo tours with her LA album celebration.

RUSSELL TAYLOR

On his sophomore album, Confessional, Russell Taylor has
revived the true meaning of sacrifice, “to make sacred,” and given us
sensuously starved listeners an intimate view of romantic relationships
draped in musical decadence as in times past. A truly dynamic performer,
Russell is set to blaze the Strictly Social stage for the first time
with his own brand of grown and sexy.

MICHELLE SHAPROW

A Yale graduate, Michelle Shaprow has made her presence felt in the
music world by producing and performing on tracks for Om Records, Warner
Brothers, and King Britt's FiveSix label while charting on Giles
Peterson's Top 20 List and major tastemaking stations such as Los
Angeles' famed KCRW. Currently Michelle is working with brilliant
producers and musicians Alex Elena (Grammy nominated producer of Alice
Smith) and Joshua Valleau (John Legend, Imani Coppola, The Future) to
complete the upcoming album Purple Skies.

has been described as fresh, inviting and intimate. She's the beginning
to a genre unclassifiable. Witness the eclectic funky flavor of this
rising underground talent.

IFE

She's being called, "A young Sade meets Lena Horne for the new
millennium" but, the enthralling singer/songwriter with a sound and
style all her own, writes and performs music that fuses R&B and Pop
with elements of Jazz and Hip Hop creating melodic gems that are hard to
forget. After years of honing her craft developing her live stage show,
style and approach, Ifé is ready to take center stage with the release
of her debut EP, CRESCENDO.

Our residents DJ Destroyer & DJ Myxzlplix will be spinning a
selection of future soul, organic hip-hop, and electronic beats all
night!
